If you have limbs hanging from your home, sidewalk, or driveway, consider pruning, removing, or installing auxiliary support cables before the cables break due to the stresses of winter weather. If it’s dead, dying, diseased, or unsafe to limb, it’s best to get rid of it.

Do you usually do your home preparations for the cold winter months, like turning on the air conditioning or covering your patio furniture with tarps? Most people seem to be doing something for the start of winter. Every homeowner has some form of property outside their home that needs protection from harsh winter weather.

Trees and shrubs are also assets for outdoor living spaces. In nice weather you can enjoy a barbecue on the terrace. Trees provide shade during the sunny, sunny days of summer. Fortunately, what you need to do to prepare your trees and other plants for winter is much simpler than dismantling your patio furniture or dragging multiple tarps to cover it.

Plan to cut or remove them
In winter, pruning is more convenient because the tree is in growth dormancy.

Inspect trees and shrubs before snow and ice buildup

Perform a visual inspection from the ground. Look for cracks, and embedded branches. Do you or your house have limbs with wires sticking out? So, could the accumulation of snow and ice cause more sagging and broken limbs?

What will the ground around the tree trunk look like? Are there any prominent surface roots? Or are there mounds/ridges around the base of the tree that could be evidence that the tree was uprooted?

Mulching, watering, fertilizer

Do not forget that trees and shrubs need water, especially in winter. Evergreens need water in winter, especially newly planted plants and hardwoods. It is recommended to soak the roots well once every two to three weeks, especially if there is no rain or snow. Deciduous plants usually require less water because their leaves drop in the winter. However, without moisture in the ground, trees can dry out and burn on warm days of winter. Applying mulch can reduce moisture evaporation by 30% – 40% and reduce soil erosion by up to 90%.

Apply 2 to 4 inches of mulch to all landscape beds and annual rings

Before fertilizing trees and shrubs, it’s best to know what you’re fertilizing and why. How do trees and shrubs look during their last growing season? All plants need the nutrients that fertilizers provide, but providing more nutrients than is readily available can be detrimental to your health and growth cycle. The best advice we can give you is to find an organic, slow-release, low-salt fertilizer that replenishes nutrients lost from your plants over the past year, promotes continued health, and improves your plants’ overall vitality, size, and color.
