It can feel a little unsettling when Mother Nature decides to dump massive amounts of snow on your lawn during the winter. You’ve invested too much time, effort, and money into your lawn. How about soft grass? Well, your turf is a little harder than you think. Believe it or not, grass can benefit from snow just as it benefits from summer sun. There are a few things to keep in mind when caring for your snowy lawn to keep it healthy.

Understanding the anatomy of frozen turf grass isn’t too complicated. The cells inside the blades of grass in your lawn are full of water. When water freezes, blades of grass lose their flexibility and are easily damaged and broken. So, it’s crunchy when you walk on the grass in winter. Grass is damaged when walking on frozen or lightly snow-covered grass. The damage may not be noticeable until the snow melts and the grass starts to melt, but rest assured that walking on grass in the winter can take its toll.

There is also the problem of snow gathering behind your shoes when walking on the lawn. Compacted snow takes longer to melt, protecting your lawn from the sun and causing noticeably uneven growth when the weather warms up. What you leave behind Footprints and snowballs are just one of the problems you leave behind when walking on snowy lawns. I also put some salt on the sidewalk to melt the ice and keep it from slipping when stepping on the lawn. Products sold to melt ice are not good for your lawn.

These harsh chemicals can eventually migrate through the snow and ice to your lawn and wreak havoc on your health. Should I shovel? You’re probably thinking that it’s inevitable that someone or something will walk on frozen grass this winter. If you have a child or dog playing outside, you may find shoveling the path an ideal solution. Problem solved! Not that fast. Put down the shovel and step away from the lawn. Because clearing snow on the grass is not the answer.

Winters where you live may seem harsh, but the snow that accumulates on the grass creates a bit of a protective layer over the grass. Clearing can do a lot of damage, not to mention the shovel itself, removing the small amount of protection your lawn has from the harsh elements of winter. More foot movement on your lawn this winter will do more damage from snow removal. Clear it and do your best not to step on it. Don’t worry, spring is right around the corner! Enjoy the beauty of the winter landscape you live in until you fall and don’t forget to avoid the snow!
